The Museum

The West Bengal Government acquired the premises No.5 Ashraf Mistri Lane (Lovelock Street), when the Institute shifted in September 2005. Work on this site was started by CPWD during late 2002.

Till date, in both the Institute building and the hostel block, about 70% of the construction(civil) work has been completed and as per CPWD’s estimates, the building will be ready for possession within the financial year 2007-2008.

Meanwhile, certain personal belongings of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad including the Bharat Ratna awarded to him posthumously and which were in the custody of Shri Abdus Salim, a close relative of Maulana Azad, were handed over to His Excellency Shri Viren J. Shah, the Governor of West Bengal, who received the same on behalf of the Institute as the President of the Governing Body of the Institute, in a brief ceremony in the Raj Bhavan – Kolkata on 18th October 2004.

The Maulana Azad Museum was inaugurated by Shri Gopal Krishna Gandhi, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal and President of the Society of this Institute, on the occasion of the 118th birth anniversary of Maulana Azad on 11.11.06, and a Maulana Azad Memorial lecture titled Azad and Sarmad was delivered by renowned historian Prof. V. N. Datta afterwards.

The memorabilia items are now being displayed in the Maulana Azad Museum.
