National Seminars / Conferences

• The Institute organized a National Symposium on “Administrative" Reforms for Economic Development in Northeast India” at Shillong on 12th July, 2007. In the above symposium Welcome Address was presented by Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray, Chairman – Executive Council of the Institute, Inaugural Address by Shri G. P. Wahlang, Chief Information Commissioner, Meghalaya, and the Keynote Address by Shri Rangan Dutta, Former Secretary, Govt. of India. The Symposium was well-attended by Bureaucrats (both former and in service), delegates from the academic as well as journalism sector and many thought-provoking papers were presented in the said symposium. The Valedictory Address was presented by Dr. P. M. Passah, (Retd.) Deptt. of Economics, NEHU.

• Dr. Binoda Kumar Mishra, Dr. Swapna Bhattacharya, Dr. Amiya Chaudhuri and Dr. Rakhee Bhattacharya, attended a Conference on “Development of Eastern India – Strategic Issues in a National Perspective” on 17 – 18 May 2007, at the National Library, Kolkata, organized by Resurgent India, a project of Divyajeevan Foundation. The Conference was inaugurated by His Excellency the President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who also delivered the keynote address on 17th May, 2007.

• On 25 April 2007, Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray presided over a Conference on “India and the European Union”, organized in Kolkata by Konrad Adenaeur Foundation, New Delhi, and Calcutta University.

• A National Seminar on the theme “Dynamics & Issues of Development in Northeast India” was organized by MAKAIAS in collaboration with the Mizoram University, at Aizwal, during 19 – 20 April, 2007.

• On 14 April 2007 , Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray was the Moderator at a Panel Discussion on “ India , Pakistan and SAARC” organized in Kolkata by Social Action Research Centre, Kolkata, Netaji Institute of Asian Studies, and School of International Relations and Strategic Studies, Jadavpur University .

• A National Seminar on the theme “Dynamics & Issues of Development in Northeast India” was organized by MAKAIAS in collaboration with the Mizoram University, at Aizwal, during 19 – 20 April, 2007.

• Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray, Chairman of the Executive Council of the Institute, Chaired the 1st session of the National Workshop held on 31 st March, 2007, on “Dynamics of India's Foreign Policy : Creating an Agenda for the Twenty First Century” , organized by the University of Calcutta.

• In collaboration with the Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, the Institute organized a 2-day National Seminar on the theme “Constraints and Opportunities of Tourism in North-East (with special reference to Arunachal Pradesh)” during 23 – 24 March 2007, in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.

• On the occasion of the 101st Foundation Anniversary of the National Council of Education, Bengal, the Institute, in collaboration with the Global India Foundation – Kolkata, organized a programme on 12th March 2007, in which Shri Sekhar Dutt, Defence Secretary, Government of India, delivered a Special Address on the theme “Emerging India : The Road Ahead and Pitfalls” at the premises of the National Council of Education, Jadavpur University Campus.

• Dr. Anita Sengupta, a Fellow of the Institute, participated in the National Seminar on “Energy and Resource Security : Challenges for the 21st Century” at Jadavpur University – Kolkata, on 8th March 2007, and presented a paper.

• Ms Priya Singh, a Fellow of the Institute, participated in the National Seminar on “Energy and Resource Security : Challenges for the 21st Century” at Jadavpur University – Kolkata, on 8th March 2007, and presented a paper titled West Asia and the Politics of Oil.

• Dr. Anita Sengupta, a Fellow of the Institute, participated in a 2-day tri-University Joint Area Studies Commemorative National Seminar on “Emerging Asia in Focus : Issues and Problems” organized by the Centre for Central Eurasian Studies, University of Mumbai, as part of the Sesquicentennial celebration of founding of the Universities of Mumbai, Calcutta and Madras, during 6 – 7 March 2007, in Mumbai, and presented a paper.

• Dr. Rakhee Bhattacharya, a Fellow of the Institute, participated in a 2-day tri-University Joint Area Studies Commemorative National Seminar on “Emerging Asia in Focus : Issues and Problems” organized by the Centre for Central Eurasian Studies, University of Mumbai, as part of the Sesquicentennial celebration of founding of the Universities of Mumbai, Calcutta and Madras, during 6 – 7 March 2007, in Mumbai, and presented a paper.

• Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray, Chairman of the Executive Council of MAKAIAS, presided over a Seminar on Pakistan convened by Prof. Suranjan Das, Director, Centre for Pakistan and West Asian Studies, & Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic), Calcutta University, on 15th February 2007, and addressed by G. Parthasarathy, former Indian Ambassador to Pakistan, on “Pakistan in Retrospect with Prospect for the Future, in the University of Calcutta.

• Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray, Chairman of the Executive Council of MAKAIAS, participated in a Conference, on 20 th January 2007 , organized by Jadavpur University , Kolkata, and submitted a paper on “Conflict/Convergence of Cultures/Civilizations” .

• The Chairman of the Executive Council, on the invitation of Shri Sunil Lal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, attended a Brain Storming session on 21st December 2006, on the theme “Dealing with Bangladesh” and the issues of Security, Economic & Investment Issues, and People to People Cooperation and Media Perceptions, pertaining to Bangladesh were discussed.

• A National Seminar-cum-Round-Table discussion on “Indian Foreign Policy: Changes and Challenges”, was held at Kolkata, on Friday, October 27, 2006, and the following panelists were present :

□ Vice-Admiral P.J. Jacob (Retd.), Former Vice-Chief of Naval Staff

□ Shri Dinesh Pathak, Former Director, Intelligence Bureau, Govt. of India

□ Shri Sunil Lal, Joint Secretary, Public Diplomacy Division, Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India

• On 10th September 2006, Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray, Chairman of the Executive Council, MAKAIAS, spoke at a Seminar in Kolkata, on “India and China” organized by the Observer Research Foundation, New Delhi, in collaboration with the University of Calcutta.

• A Seminar on Indian Diaspora : Past and Present was organized by the Institute in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, at the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Kolkata, during 28 - 29 March 2006.

• In collaboration with the Centre for International Studies, Vidya Prasarak Mandal, Mumbai, the Institute organized a Seminar on India-China Relations : An Agenda for Asian Security during 27 - 29 March 2006.

• On the occasion of the Centenary Year of the Department ofArabic & Persian Studies, Calcutta University, the Institute in collaboration with the above Department, organized an International Seminar on the theme Arabic and Persian Studies in Bengal : Peace as Value in Literature during 20 - 22 March 2006. A Special Session was devoted to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, as he was a great scholar of Arabic and Persian Studies, and his contributions to the Arabic & Persian Studies were exhaustively discussed in the above Seminar.

• The Chairman of the Institute delivered a lecture at a Seminar in Kolkata on Administrative Reorganization to Enrich Democracy in India organized by the Society for National and Global Affairs and Bose Academy for Career Advancement, on 18th March 2006. Other speakers at this Seminar included Shri A. K. Deb, Chief Secretary, Govt. of West Bengal, and Shri D. Bandyopadhyay, IAS (Retd).

• The Chairman of the Institute delivered a lecture at a Seminar in Kolkata on Administrative Reorganization to Enrich Democracy in India organized by the Society for National and Global Affairs and Bose Academy for Career Advancement, on 18th March 2006. Other speakers at this Seminar included Shri A. K. Deb, Chief Secretary, Govt. of West Bengal, and Shri D. Bandyopadhyay, IAS (Retd).

• The Chairman of the Executive Council of the Institute, Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray, delivered a lecture on the theme EU and SAARC : A Comparative Analysis on 17th March 2006, in a Seminar jointly organized by the Netaji Institute for Asian Studies, Kolkata, the Department of International Relations, Jadavpur University, and Peace Studies Group, University of Calcutta, in the Seminar Room of the NIAS building.

• The Chairman of the Executive Council of the Institute, Prof. JayantaKumar Ray, delivered a lecture on Conflict/Dialogue among Cultures/Civilizations on 9th March 2006 at The Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Kolkata, under the Advanced Course in International Understanding for Human Unity approved by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, and the UNESCO.

• To mark the 60th year of the Partition of India in 2007, the Centrefor Refugee Studies, Jadavpur University, initiated the Revisiting Partition Programme : National Consultation - Towards an Archive on Partition of India, in collaboration with MAKAIAS on 14 February 2006, at New Delhi.

• A Workshop on "Developing Durable Peace Processes and Partners, Building Confidence on the Ground" was organized by the Centre for Refugee Studies, Deptt. of International Relations, Jadavpur University and Delhi Policy Group, at Kolkata on February 11 and 12, 2006. The Workshop was launched by Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray, Chairman of the Executive Council of this Institute.

• Under the auspices of this Institute, a Panel discussion on the theme "Swadeshi Movement and the Partition of Bengal : The Cultural Impact" was held during the 66th Session of the Indian History Congress on 28 - 30 January 2006, at the Viswa Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal.

• Prof. Muntassir Mamoon of the Deptt. of History, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and a Visiting Fellow of the Institute, delivered a lecture on "Bangladesh : The Current Political Situation" on 27th December 2005, in the Conference Hall of the Institute and had an interactive session with the participants.

• The Director attended a meeting of the Hindi Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Culture on 20th December 2005 , held under the Chairmanship of the Hon'ble Minister Shri S. Jaipal Reddy at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi .

• Under its North-East programme, the Institute in collaboration with the Department of History, Gauhati University, Assam, organised a 2-day National Seminar on the theme “Changing Patterns of Economy and their Impact on Society in the North-East region of India” on 20th and 21st May, 2005 at Guwahati.
