International Seminars / Conferences

• The 3rd K2K (Kunming-Kolkata) International Conference was organized at Kolkata on 21 – 22 July 2007, in joint collaboration with Yunnan Development Research Center, Kunming, China, and other Chinese organizations who deputed their delegates for this Conference. The Welcome Address was given by Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray, Chairman – Executive Council of the Institute, and the Inaugural Address was presented by Shri Amitava Nandy, Hon’ble Member of the Indian Parliament.

• Dr. Anita Sengupta, Fellow, participated in a bilateral seminar organized by Institute for Defence Studies & Analyses, New Delhi, in collaboration with ISRS Tashkent, on Central Asia, on April 11 – 12, 2007, and presented a paper titled Russia-China-US : Three Bilateral Relations in Central Asia.

• Dr. Sreemati Ganguli, a Fellow of the Institute participated and presented a paper titled “Is Russia Still Relevant for India?” in an International Conference on Indo-Russian Diplomatic Relations : 60 years of Enduring Ties, organized by the Centre for Central Eurasian Studies, University of Mumbai, and Cultural Centre of Russia in Mumbai, during 9 – 10 April, 2007.

•Dr. Suchandana Chatterjee, a Fellow of the Institute,submitted a paper titled “Crossing Paths and Romanticizing Contacts : Memories of Soviet Socialist Order” in an International Conference on Indo-Russian Diplomatic Relations : 60 years of Enduring Ties, organized by the Centre for Central Eurasian Studies, University of Mumbai, and Cultural Centre of Russia in Mumbai, during 9 – 10 April, 2007.

•Dr. Anita Sengupta, a Fellow of the Institute, participated in a bilateral seminar on India and Turkmenistan : Retrospect and Prospect organized by India-Central Asia Foundation in collaboration with Turkmen State University named after Magtumguli, Institute of History, Ashgabat and State Cultural Centre Heritage, MIRAS, in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on 2nd April 2007, and presented a paper titled “Finding a Course : “Modernity” and Transition to Independent Statehood in Turkmenistan”.

• Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray, Chairman of the Executive Council of the Institute, participated in an International Seminar on “Human Security in South Asia”, (Japan-India Friendship Year 2007) organized by the Calcutta University in collaboration with the Institute of Oriental Culture, University of Tokyo, on 28 – 29 March 2007, and presented a paper on the theme “Governance as a Human Security Issue”.

• Dr. Suchandana Chatterjee and Dr. Anita Sengupta, Fellows of the Institute, participated in an International Conference on the theme “India-Central Asia : Reinforcing Traditional Relationship through Synergy of Culture and Energy” organized by the Centre for Central Asian Studies, Jiwaji University, Gwalior, at Gwalior from 20 – 22 January 2007, and submitted papers titled Siberia Disconnected or Reconnected ? and Re-examining the “Centrality” of Central Asia : Outsider Description and the Insider’s Portrayal respectively.

• The Institute organized an International Conference, on the theme “Away but Not Apart : Evolving Relationships between India and her Diaspora” at Hotel Oberoi Grand in Kolkata, during 11 – 13 January, 2007. Around Nineteen persons (NRIs and People of Indian origin) from seven countries – along with other Indians – participated in the Conference, and many of them submitted papers relevant to the theme. The Conference was immensely successful. It is a prelude to more fruitful contacts between our Institute and counterparts in other countries.

• Professor Jayanta Kumar Ray, Chairman of the Executive Council and a few Fellows of the Institute, visited Yangon in Myanmar during 11 to 14 December 2006, for a scholarly exchange visit and Conference/Seminar/discussions with the Myanmar Union of Chamber of Commerce, Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Myanmar, and International Relations Department in the Yangon University. Papers were also presented by the Institute Fellows in the Seminar held in the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies.

• In December, 2006 upon the invitation of the Yunnan Development Research Center, Kunming, Peoples’ Republic of China, the Chairman of the Executive Council also visited China and attended a Conference organized by the Chinese hosts on India-China-Myanmar relations.

• Under the auspices of this Institute, an International Conference on “Armed Conflict, Development and Governance” was held on 1 – 2 December 2006, in Womens’ College, Shillong.

• The Institute, in collaboration with the China Center for Contemporary World Studies, China, organized a 2-day Joint Seminar on the theme “Rise to the Challenge of Globalization : Experiences of China and India” during 28 – 29 August 2006, in Beijing, China. The Conference was attended by the Chairman of the of the Executive Council, Acting Director and some other members of the Executive Council, who also submitted papers in the above Conference.

• In an International Seminar organized by the India-Central Asia Foundation and Indian Council of World Affairs, on 8th August 2006 in New Delhi, a publication of this Institute entitled Central Asia : Pre-historic to Pre-Modern Times (in 2 vols.) authored by the noted Tajik Academician Babajon Gafurov, was released by His Excellency Mr Emomali Sharifovich Rahmanov, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan.

• The Chairman of the Executive Council of the Institute, Prof. Jayanta Kumar Ray, delivered a lecture and presided over one of the sessions in an International Seminar on Bangladesh : National, Regional and Global Context, on April 23 – 26, 2006 at Shillong under the auspices of Society for Peace, Security and Development Studies, Allahabad, and Konrad Adenaur Foundation, New Delhi.

• In collaboration with the Department of History, Jadavpur University, the Institute organized an International Seminar on the theme History of Waters in South Asia : Climate, Ecology, De-forestation, Agriculture, Politics and the Management of Nature on 3rd March, 2006, at Jadavpur University.

• The Institute in collaboration with the Centre for European Studies, Jadavpur University, organized a 2-day International Seminar on the theme Performances and Culture : Ontology, Translation and Exchange, which was also duly supported by the Department of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal, on 25th and 27th January 2006 in Kolkata.

• The Director attended an International Conference on the theme "Contributions of Raja Mahendra Pratap and Professor Barkatullah Bhopali" organized by the Department of Arabic, Barkatullah University, Bhopal, during 1st to 3rd December 2005, under the auspices of this Institute.
